I bagged my own groceries yesterday at PCC and I thought the cashier was going to faint from shock. She told me that I was very good at bagging groceries. “Very fast.” she said. Smile.
My scooter will be delivered on Friday afternoon. I am very excited about this. I bought a helmet yesterday, as well as a $75 lock so no one will steal it. People are going around stealing gas- why not scooters?
My classes are going well. I LOVE my chemistry teacher. She’s energetic, knows her stuff, and is funny as hell. The hour and a half in class just whizzes by.Lab yesterday consisted of extracting fat from bratwurst and hotdogs. Sounds strange, but it was a test to see how the % of fat is calculated and how accurate it is. We boiled the meat with an emulsifier and centrifuged the fat away from the meat product. It was interesting.
I am glad to be taking Chemistry again. I HATED my class last quarter. The teacher, a new UW graduate, lectured using powerpoint and couldn’t wait to leave class early. She didn’t explain why certain important organic compounds were, well, important in the human body-which we need to know. When we would ask questions, she would shrug her shoulders and tell us to look it up. Sara, my teacher this quarter, goes into great detail about why/what/how/etc. these organic materials do in our body and what happens if they are too abundant/scarce. Since we are nursing students, this is very important and relevant. My last teacher gave us 20 page tests consisting of ALL questions being reactions. Why should I memorize 20 amino acids if you cannot tell us why? Anyway- enough bitching. I am glad I decided to take this class again, because it is valuable information that was omitted last quarter.
In other news, Matthew and I are taking a “second honeymoon” trip to Denmark and Amsterdam next month after I finish classes. I have a friend in Copenhagen, and he is nice enough to let us use his house as a home base while we trek around the country. I bought the tickets yesterday, and will be buying 2 more to Amsterdam. Matt is getting his passport right now. Theo asked us why we would go to Denmark, of all places. He would rather go to Tokyo.
Well, off to shower and study

Sitting in the student union, waiting for my chemistry class to begin. I was going to review my notes, but I don’t feel like it. Maybe it’s the long drive that kills my spirit.Sometimes I look around the union, seeing if anyone will make eye contact. It’s my daily goal: to try to get someone in Seattle to get out their shell and engage, at least for a second, with someone. But, no. People here, they prefer to stare at the ground when I walk past; they utter “hello” very quickly if I say it to them first; if I catch someones eyes on me, they dart them away as fast as they can so I won’t notice. No wonder it’s hard to make friends in this town- and I have been here for 10 years! Don’t get me wrong- I have friends in Seattle, but not many close friends like I do in other parts of the world. Maybe I’m the one that is closed up; I’m willing to consider that. Well! Time to go take my seat and learn about triglycerides and esterification, shall we?
